The Commission's History and Mission Minimize

In 1976, the County of Riverside Board of Supervisors established a temporary Committee on the Status of Women, which was made permanent in 1978. In 1983, the committee was elevated to commission status. In 1987, the name was modernized from Commission on the Status of Women to its current title of the Commission for Women.

The Commission for Women was established to be the premier facilitator and advocate for women's issues in Riverside County. Through our networks with other commissions and women's groups throughout the County, state and region, the commission projects our voice and advocates for support, diversity and change on behalf of women in this County.

Looking Ahead...
The Commission for Women will continue to:
  • Identify issues, concerns and needs affecting the status of women.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations to the County Board of Supervisors, creating a partnership for actions on important and timely issues.
  • Provide education and information regarding policies and legislative actions addressing women's needs.
  • Refer individuals and groups to appropriate services, organizations, and resources.
  • Promote use of community contacts and other women's commissions to increase visibility of women's issues and maximize the Commission's impact.
